The Attack

This morning something attacked the chickens. One Barred Rock dead and Sheldon got injured badly. We are not sure if he is going to make it or not. I will say probably not. There were no witnesses but since they were not eaten we believe it was probably Topper. His job is to kill things. Mice, rats, bugs so it is hard to get onto him too much, especially since we didn't see him. From now on though the hose will squirt him (or anything else) if they come near the coop and we see them.

It is hard to see how bad the wounds are but you can see his wing hanging down on the right side.

Poor Sheldon. We think Topper grabbed his wing from under the door or through the fence and just tore him up.

As a precaution Pup & Gavin re-enforced the coop. They put pallets all around the bottom section of wire and made the mesh above the door more secure.

On a happier note the first Sunflowers have started blooming!

Pup & Gavin took the black cover off of the hen house. They were not getting in it anymore while it was on. 

White chick is checking it out here and several others were in and out of it while I was out there.

I'm not sure what to do for a cover but they sure did not like the black tarp type we had on it!

Picture with black tarp on for a cover. It was supposed to keep the rain out and give them some privacy. I had heard they liked it better when laying. 

I gave them some watermelon rinds. They seemed to love them!
